 Gellert Baths (Gellert furdo)

There are thirteen baths in Budapest, but the Gellert Bath holds the title of “most beautiful” among them. According to legend, its healing properties were first experienced by a hermit monk when he settled in the cave above it. He mistakenly believed that the main healing agent was mud, not water. In fact, this is due to the muddy water. The Art Nouveau palace building with stained glass windows, marble columns, bronze statues and drinking fountains has been a center of attraction for tourists from all over the world for more than a century.

According to the chronicler, King Andras II, a representative of the Arpad dynasty, took medicinal baths back in the 13th century. It was on his order that the first hospital was built near the springs. The Ottomans, who entered Buda, built Turkish baths in its place.

Emperor Franz Joseph I initiated the construction of the bath complex, and in 1918 the Gellert Baths were officially opened. The architects created a magnificent hydropathic hotel: arched gates decorated with sculptures, marble columns, stained glass windows with scenes from epic poems, mosaic floors, pools covered with Zsolnay pyrogranite.

In subsequent years, the complex developed significantly, but the Second World War almost completely destroyed it. In 2008, a grandiose reconstruction was carried out and the spa hotel was restored to its original appearance. Currently, this building will undoubtedly amaze you with its grandeur and pomp.

The Gellert Mountain springs supply the baths with mineral water, the temperature of which ranges from 38-43 degrees. depending on the water level in the Danube.

Gellert currently has ten indoor and two outdoor swimming pools. There are wave, sitting, hydromassage, thermal, therapeutic, cooling, adventure and children's pools.

The Gellert baths offer a full range of balneotherapeutic and spa services: carbon dioxide and pearl baths, mud treatments, salt chambers, healing, healing, stone, Thai and “chocolate” massages, as well as aroma massage .

Gellert bath water contains sodium, calcium, magnesium, metaboric and silicic acids. Here are the indications for which they are especially useful: diseases of the spine, intervertebral discs and neuralgia, inflammation and narrowing of joints, post-traumatic therapy, circulatory disorders, asthma, bronchitis.

Some pools require you to wear a swimming cap (you can get one from the rental shop). Guests must leave the pools 15 minutes before closing.

Men's and women's locker rooms are separate. There are chairs and small cabinets where you can store clothes. If you don't want to change clothes with others, you can buy a ticket for a separate cabin.

You choose a pool depending on the desired water temperature. You can also visit the sauna, sunbathe, drink coffee or beer under an umbrella.
