 Szechenyi Bath (Széchenyi Thermal Baths)

This magnificent complex is more reminiscent of a royal palace, where thermal, healing, bubbling and relaxing water reigns. She rises from the depths of the earth to give people joy, relieve fatigue, heal and restore youth. The Szechenyi Bath is located on the territory of Varosliget Park, where the legendary King Matthias hunted. Most local Hungarians call it "Szecska". A model of the building represents Hungary in the Mini-Europe park in Brussels.

The Széchenyi Thermal Baths have been in operation since 1913. In 1938, another artesian well was dug, which reduced the cost of heating water, since 77-degree thermal water was discovered at a depth of 1256 meters.

Fortunately, the complex suffered only minor damage during World War II. In 2007, a ten-year large-scale renovation was completed here, and the pools were equipped with circulation and cleaning systems in accordance with European Union standards.

Since the end of the 20th century, the Szechenyi Bath has become a large balneological resort, visited by several million people annually.

It is interesting that initially they wanted to call the complex an artesian bath. But before the opening, they remembered that, unlike Buda, nothing in Pest is named after Count István Szechenyi (they didn’t remember the Széchenyi Chain Bridge) and named it in honor of the great reformer.

Another interesting fact: the hippopotamuses of the Budapest Zoo also bathe in Széchenyi thermal water (its chemical composition looks like the Nile). And oh, a miracle... Every year a newborn is added to their family, which is very rare for these animals in captivity. Therefore, some women are sure that this water helps to get pregnant. Who knows... who knows...

The Sechen bathing complex has 16 pools of five types with a total area of 2700 square meters:

- large outdoor swimming pool. Water temperature 26-29 degrees;

- outdoor entertaining pool of various types. Water temperature up to 34 degrees;

– outdoor “sedentary” pool. The water temperature is up to 38 degrees (they also play chess here - this is an old tradition);

- two indoor swimming pools. Water temperature 16 degrees;

- 11 indoor pools with thermal water. Water temperature 18-40 degrees.

Thermal water rises from a well that is the hottest in Europe. Contains bicarbonate, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, sodium ions, microcomponents of fluorine and boron. Useful for arthritis, spinal pain, orthopedic therapy, post-traumatic rehabilitation.

Drinking well water is recommended for gastritis, ulcers, enteritis, and kidney diseases. It is also used for inhalation. Szechenyi water should be taken in small sips in the morning on an empty stomach.

If you are planning to visit the Széchenyi Baths, take a swimsuit, hat and flip-flops with you. Otherwise you will have to rent it and leave a deposit of HUF 4,000.

Along with your entrance ticket you will receive a bracelet, which is also the key to the locker. The administration advises not to take valuables with you, as it does not take responsibility for their safety.

Keep in mind that thermal waters are medicinal and should be taken in doses. Some medical procedures are only available with a doctor's prescription.

You are allowed to bring food into the Széchenyi Baths, although there is also a buffet in the building.
