Hungarian Opera House - World of Music

The Hungarian Opera House ranks third in Europe for its acoustics. In this regard, it is surpassed only by Milan's La Scala and the Paris Opera House. The author of its project is the Hungarian architect Miklós Ibl - the same one who designed Andrássy Avenue, the so-called “Champs Elysees of Budapest”. The Hungarian Opera House is one of the most beautiful in the world. It can accommodate 1261 people. The hall is shaped like a horseshoe. It was built in the neo-Renaissance style and is richly decorated with Baroque ornaments, sculptures and paintings. Of particular interest are the walls along the interior staircase and in the auditorium painted by Bertalan Székely, Mor Tan and Kara Lotz.

A little history

The construction of the Opera House lasted about 10 years. Its grand opening took place in 1884. The ceremony was attended by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary.

The first director of the theater was Ferenc Erkel, the author of the first Hungarian opera and the country's national anthem. His statue is located at the entrance to the building. This honor also went to another Hungarian composer, the world famous Franz Liszt.

Many famous singers, conductors and composers worked at the Hungarian Opera House, including Giacomo Puccini.

The building evokes admiration both from the outside and from the inside. This is especially true for the audience. Red and gold colors, painted ceilings and bronze chandeliers make you want to wear a suit or tuxedo. However, spectators are required to wear evening dresses and tuxedos only during premieres and celebrations.
