Royal Palace in Naples

Naples has unique architectural monuments, museums and historical buildings. The Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale), which is located in the central part of the city, on Piazza del Plebiscito, is no exception and is distinguished by its magnificence. It was the main residence of the monarchs of the Bourbon dynasty of both kingdoms of Sicily. Its length is almost 170 meters. There are windows on two levels of the building, and in the center of the first level you will see the coats of arms of the kings.

The Royal Palace was built by the architect Domenico Fontana in the middle of the 17th century as a residence for King Philip III of Spain, although the monarch never came to Naples.

The palace was reconstructed several times. In 1768, the Royal Court Theater was built there, and in 1888, statues of the kings of Naples were placed in the niches of the first floor.

Members of the royal families of Spain and Austria and their nobility, King Ferdinand I, the Bourbons, representatives of the Savoy dynasty, as well as marshals, permanently lived in the Palazzo Reale Napoleon, Murat and his wife, the emperor's sister Caroline Bonaparte and others.

In 1837, an entire wing was added to the palace, which housed the National Library. Along with many books, there are papyri found in the ancient Italian city of Herculaneum.

The palace has a luxurious interior: magnificent halls, painted ceilings and walls, tapestries, chandeliers - real works of art. I will highlight the central hall, the Hercules Hall, the throne room.

These halls make up the museum of the historical apartments of the palace. They house a collection of paintings, the most popular of which are works by Guercino, Titian Vecellio, Andrea Vaccaro, Spanieletto, Mattia Preti, Luca Giordano and other famous artists.

Inside the building there is a “court of dignity” and a courtyard for wheelchairs.

The palace has a gallery of time that will tell you the 2500-year history of Naples. Outside the building you will see three types of gardens. These are: “Romantic Garden”, “Garden of Italy” and “Roof Garden”.
