 Safety in Rome

Rome has many attractions that are visited by many people. Recently, the capital of Italy has introduced many new rules of conduct. I assure you, you will really find their knowledge useful. These rules were adopted to protect the attractions and local population from the increased flow of tourists. For example, tourists are prohibited from swimming in the fountains of the "Eternal City" or touching the statues. This primarily concerns the Trevi Fountain, near which several acts of vandalism have been committed in recent years. Now the police have the right to block access to attractions if they encounter a large flow of tourists.

In addition, tourists in Rome are prohibited from sitting on the steps of another main attraction of the city - the Spanish Steps and carrying suitcases on wheels on them.

It is also prohibited to walk around the streets of the city naked to the waist, to eat food that can be scattered or spilled. You cannot touch the fountains with your lips and drink water that way. To do this, you must have a glass with you.

In the province of Lazio, tourists who do not order anything in a restaurant or cafe are required to pay to use the toilet. This applies to bars, pizzerias, etc. Violators of the rules face a fine of 250-450 euros. It is also possible to forcibly expel a person from a certain area of the city for 48 hours.

Here are some more tips that you might find useful:

- At airports and train stations, do not trust people in civilian clothes who show you some kind of token and say that they are police or detectives - most likely, you are dealing with scammers. Ask for identification.

- Beware of pickpockets and moped thieves (thieves on mopeds) in the city center and in crowded places. Sometimes they act in groups: one will distract you, and the other will steal something. They can snatch a bag from passers-by while driving by. Be careful with your things, and keep your money and documents in the hotel safe.

- You will not be allowed into the Vatican and churches in mini-dresses, shorts, dresses with a deep neckline and sleeveless clothes.

- At the entrance to the church, you can be stopped and asked to pay money. Ignore them - entrance to the churches of Rome is free.

- In crowded places, you can often meet people selling souvenirs. They can say that they liked you and give you a souvenir, but as soon as you take it, they will ask you to pay. Therefore, be strict with such people and do not take anything from them.

- Do not go with a stranger to a restaurant or a bar, even if he is with his daughter - they will order champagne for several hundred euros, and you will have to pay.

- I recommend having a small phrasebook with you, since locals do not know foreign languages very well.

- Be careful of pickpockets, especially at Termini station.

- If you are bothered by a strange man, say: "Sto aspettando il marito", which means "I am waiting for my husband." If you are being followed by a man on a bus or metro car, do not hesitate to shout "Aiuto!" - sexual violence is a harsh reaction in Italy, so the person who disturbs your peace will leave.

- I do not recommend walking alone in Rome at night.
