 Where to eat inexpensively in Rome

If you want to spend as little as possible on food and drinks while in Rome, read this article carefully. I will offer you several options, and you can choose for yourself. As in other European capitals, you can get by relatively inexpensively in Rome if you buy food in cheap supermarkets and cook at home. In addition, you can eat on the street. The Italian capital offers many opportunities for this. I will provide you with information on where to have an inexpensive breakfast, lunch and dinner in Rome.

Please note that prices are higher in the center. Give preference to cafes and restaurants where locals go - away from attractions and crowded places. Go to places with local names: taverns, pizzerias, trattorias (family cuisine), osterias, pasticcerias (cafe-pastry shops).

Food in Rome is quite expensive. If you want to save money, I recommend buying ready-made food in supermarkets, for example Lidl, Despar, Conad, Margherita, Sma, Auchan, Carrefour. There are plenty of them in Rome. All supermarkets will offer you excellent quality products.

Supermarkets often have discounts. Look for shelves with a sign QUI in stores. They put meat, fish, bakery products, juices, etc., which are about to expire. That is why they are discounted by 50% or more. If you buy beer in a package, you will get a discount of up to 25%. Enjoy coffee and other drinks at the bar (al banko) - it will cost you less. For the same purpose, you can have lunch in a cafe in a shopping center.

Now I will give you approximate prices for some products in Rome supermarkets:

- beef (1 kg.) - 13.60 euros;

- rice (1 kg.) - 2 euros;

- potatoes (1 kg.) - 1.10 euros;

- cheese (1 kg., local) - 10.7 euros;

- tomatoes (1 kg.) - 2 euros;

- milk (1 liter) - 1.20 euros;

- eggs (12 pieces) - 2.8 euro;

- chicken fillet (1 kg.) - 11 euro;

So, if you want to save money, buy groceries in supermarkets.

Keep in mind that if you do not go to cafes and restaurants before 15:00, they will close and you will have to either wait 2-3 hours until they open, or go to fast food outlets and supermarkets.

Many establishments have a "menu of the day" - "menu al giorno" - it is available only on weekdays, and even then at certain hours, usually from 12:00 to 14:00. Different restaurants have different "menus of the day". First and second courses can be purchased for 10 euros.

In Lazio and Rome, it is forbidden to pay extra for table setting and service charges (coperto, servizio e coperto). Service charge should be included in the menu.

If you cook at home, expect to pay 10-12 euros per person per day, otherwise - at least 20-25 euros.
