Those who are planning to fly to Hungary will definitely have a question about how to get from the airport to the center of the capital or any other place. This information will also be useful to you when you fly back. Below I will introduce you in detail to different ways to solve this problem: fast and relatively slow, economical and relatively expensive. Read this article carefully and decide for yourself which one is worth more in terms of time, money or comfort. Let me remind you that the distance from the airport to the city center is about 22 kilometers.
The easiest and cheapest way to get from the airport of the capital of Hungary to its center is public transport. You can also choose a taxi or order a group transfer (a minibus in which you will not be alone). I'll walk you through the pros and cons of each option, but first a few words about the airport you'll be flying into.
The construction of the airport in Budapest began in the 30s of the last century, but this was prevented by the Second World War and it was opened only in 1950. It was originally called Ferie, and in 2011, on the 200th anniversary of the birth of the famous Hungarian composer Franz Liszt, it was renamed in his honor.
Currently there are two terminals at Liszt Franz Airport: 2A and 2B. Airplanes from the countries of the former USSR usually land at Terminal 2B.
The easiest and most economical way to get from the airport to the city is public transport. Bus stop 200E at the entrance to Terminal 2B. You will have to sit in it because during the day there is almost nothing else going here.
It will take you to the Kobania-Kipshesti station of the M3 metro line. 200Ebuses operate around the clock, intervals are up to 10 minutes (in the early morning and late evening this time increases), travel time is about 30 minutes.
The cost of one trip on public transport in Budapest is 350 Hungarian forints. For this price, you can buy a ticket either at the counter in the terminal (it is not open at night), or at the machine at the stop, where you can select your language. Please note that you must insert coins or small denomination notes (forints only) or pay by credit card. Detailed information about tickets and passes can be found on the page Budapest Public Transport.
If you are confused by the forint and don't know what the relationship is between it and the euro, visit Hungarian currency. You should already have a plan on how to get to the metro. I recommend searching online to see which station you need or which bus or tram you need to take. You can get from Budapest to the airport in the reverse order: hotel - bus, tram or directly metro - Kobania-Kipshesti metro station - bus 200E.
Direct bus 100E to the airport
Since the summer of 2017, another route has been assigned for travel between the airport and the center of Budapest - bus No. 100E. Departs from Deák Ferenc tér (this is the city center) every 7-10 minutes, and from midnight to 03:40 - every 20 minutes. Open 24 hours a day.
This bus only stops twice. But keep in mind that the fare is 1,500 forints. It does not include travel tickets. You will need to purchase a special ticket. Sold at the airport and in all ticket machines in the city.
Group transfer from Budapest airport to hotel
For those who do not like public transport, but their pockets do not allow them to take a taxi, we offer minibuses miniBUD. The minibus seats 8-10 people and takes tourists from the airport to their destination. It is equipped in such a way that each passenger needs approximately one direction.
The cost of the transfer depends on the area of Budapest where you are going. The fare decreases when the minibus is full. The basic fare is €7 per person from the airport to the city centre.
From Budapest airport to the center - by taxi
A taxi, that is, a private transfer, is the easiest and most comfortable way to get from Budapest Airport and vice versa. There are no taxis on the streets of the Hungarian capital. You can call him from your hotel or find him at the airport taxi stand.
There are a lot of cars and you won’t have to wait. But be prepared to lighten your wallet. A trip from the airport to the center will cost you at least 8,000 forints (about 28 euros). Probably more. It makes sense to order a taxi if 3-4 people are traveling together and the amount will be divided.
You can also order a taxi (and minibus) online. There are many licensed taxi companies in Budapest: Főtaxi/Budapest Taxi, Bólt, City Taxiand others. For more information, visit: https://bkk.hu/en/travel-information/cars-and-freight-transport/taxi-services/. There you will receive detailed information about both the price and the make of the car.
From Budapest airport to the center - by rail
You can also go from Budapest Airport to the center by train, but this is a rather inconvenient way, since you will have to take a bus from the second terminal to the first terminal, and then wait for the train that will take you to the western railway station city station (Nyugati palyaudvar).
The journey will take you half an hour. Ticket price is 370 forints, including 350 forints for bus travel. Train travel is especially convenient for those living in the Newgate Station area. If, on the contrary, you are going from the station to the airport, then get off at the stop Ferihedy and take the bus No.200E (stop nearby).
Car rental
If you like to do everything yourself, sit behind the wheel and travel this way, then this option is for you. With a rented car you can get from the airport not only to the center of Budapest, but also to anywhere in Hungary and beyond. To do this, it is better to order it online in advance, for which you need to go to a website, for example Rentalcars.com or to a link, for example, Klasswagen.hu/en /cars. Keep in mind that this will cost you at least 30 euros per day (add the price of gasoline).
