1. Briefly about Milan

Milan (in Italian Milano), along with Rome, is one of the oldest cities in Italy. It was founded by the Gauls around 600 BC. e. Milan was the capital of the Roman Empire several times. In Latin it was called "Mediolanum", which means the middle of the valley - Milan is located in the valley of the Po River, at an altitude of 120 meters above sea level. Due to its strategically important location, it was called the second Rome (Roma secunda).

In 22 AD, Milan was conquered by the Romans, and from 286 it became the capital of the Western Roman Empire and the residence of the emperors. In 1162, Milan was captured and sacked by the German Emperor FrederickIBarbarossa. Barbarossa was defeated in 1176. An important era in the history of the city began with the rise to power of the Visconti in 1277 and the Sforza in 1450. Famous artists and architects came to Milan, including Leonardo da Vinci and Donato Bramante, and many new buildings appeared. Since 1530, the city was ruled by the Spanish Habsburgs, in 1714–1768 and 1814–1859 by the Austrians, and in 1796–1814 by the French. In the XIX century, under the rule of the Austrians, Milan became the intellectual center of the Risorgimento - the struggle for the unification of Italy, and since 1845 - the industrial metropolis of northern Italy.
