Place de la Concorde in Paris

Place de la Concorde is called the heart of Paris. It is located in the most beautiful place of the capital, close to other attractions. It offers a wonderful view of the Egyptian Obelisk, the Eiffel Tower, the Seine River, the National Assembly, the Madeleine Church, the Champs Elysees, the Ferris wheel and the Tuileries Garden. This is a clean and well-kept square, from which many begin their tour of Paris. Place de la Concorde is the central square of Paris, a magnificent example of the Classicism era. Only the Place des Quinconces in Bordeaux is larger.

The central square of Paris was created in 1755 by order of the king and named in honor of Louis XV. This place was an octagonal elevation above the moat. At each corner there were allegorical statues depicting the main cities of France. In the center was the figure of Louis XV on horseback.

During the French Revolution, the square turned into a sad place - instead of the statue of the king, a grand guillotine was installed. Queen Marie Antoinette, King Louis XVI, the leaders of the revolution - Robespierre and Danton - and about 1,300 more people were executed here. At that time, this place was called "Place de la Revolution". After the end of the troubled times, the "Bridge of Concord" was built on the Seine River. It leads directly to the building of the National Assembly.

In 1831, the French authorities received the Luxor Obelisk of Pharaoh Ramses II as a gift from the ruler of Egypt, Mehmet Ali. The monument, 23 meters high and weighing 250 tons, was delivered on the ship "Luxor". It was erected on the square only in 1836.

On the square you will also see two nine-meter fountains. They are decorated with columns and mythological characters. There are also many lanterns here.

At the crossroads, near the Champs Elysees, there are two statues of Marly's horses, at the entrance to the Tuileries Gardens - two statues of Coysevox's horses.

In the evening, when everything is lit up, the place looks even more beautiful.
