Holocaust is a word of Greek origin and means “to be completely burned.” In our era, it means the persecution and mass extermination of Jews living in Germany, its allies and in the territory occupied in 1933-1945 by Nazi Germany and collaborators. The Holocaust caused enormous damage to Hungary. In the years mentioned above, 70 percent of the Jews living in Hungary were exterminated. It was a great tragedy.
The monument to the victims of the Holocaust is located a few hundred meters from the Hungarian Parliament building. There are about 60 pairs of shoes here. Do you think a group of people wanted to go barefoot? In fact, the shoes are made of iron. Their combination makes the viewer sad. It is dedicated to the memory of Jews executed in Budapest during World War II.
This monument was erected on the banks of the Danube 13 years ago, but today it is already known throughout the world.
As if thrown shoes from afar look like real ones.
Nearby there is a metal plaque, embedded in concrete on three sides, in English, Hungarian and Hebrew (Hebrew) with the inscription: “In memory of those shot by Arrow Cross volunteers in 1944–1945. Installed April 16, 2005."
"Crossed Arrows" - National Socialist Party of Hungary. It included Hungarian fascists. This party did not rule Hungary for long, but managed to cause great pain to the people, especially the Jews. Members of the Arrow Cross took dozens of Jews to the banks of the Danube, tied them together with rope and shot the last one. The one who fell into the water dragged the others with him. Thus, the Nazis did not even want to waste ammunition and time preparing graves. Around 500-600 thousand Jews were exterminated throughout Hungary. The remaining shoes were either sold or used for their intended purpose.
According to the documents of the Nuremberg trials, 6 million people died in the Holocaust.
The author of the sculpture is Hungarian Diula Power. (The idea belongs to the Hungarian director Ken Togay.) Such shoes were worn in the forties of the twentieth century. Nowadays there are always fresh flowers and candles burning...
