 Fisherman's Bastion in Budapest

The Fisherman's Bastion is an impressive building in Budapest. Its name probably makes you think of a fish and a castle. However, you will not find any fish or fishermen there. This beautiful structure has also never been used for defense purposes. Instead, it offers beautiful views of the Danube and Pest. Below you will learn about other interesting facts about this beautiful spectacle, which I highly recommend visiting. It will really give you pleasure.

The construction of this architectural structure, located on Buda Hill, like many attractions, began at the end of the 19th century in connection with the 1000th anniversary of Hungary. However, the builders did not meet the deadlines and Fisherman’s Bastion has been pleasing the eyes of local residents and guests of the city since 1905.

There used to be a walled square where fishermen sold fish. Over time, the walls were damaged and trade ceased. Simultaneously with the reconstruction of Buda Palace, it was decided to build the Fisherman's Bastion, which will become the architectural backdrop for Matthias Church. This was done successfully.

Both the bastion and the church are located on Trinity Square. The reconstruction of Matthias Church was carried out by the architect Frides Szulek. He also created a project for a fishermen's bastion.

The Fisherman's Bastion consists of seven hipped towers. There is a statue of St. Stephen on horseback in the square. On the pedestal there are bas-reliefs depicting the life of St. Stephen. The statue was installed in 1906.

As I already said, there is a beautiful view of the Danube and Pest from here.

If you are in Budapest for a few days, we recommend visiting the Fisherman's Bastion in the evening. You will see two completely different panoramas that will amaze you.

During the construction of the fishermen's bastion, a chapel named after St. Michael was discovered. Currently, this bell tower houses a 3D cinema where you can watch a 15-minute film about the thousand-year history of Hungary. You will be given 3D glasses and headphones. The entrance ticket costs 1,500 forints.

Entry to most of the balconies and towers of Fisherman's Bastion is free, but you'll have to buy a ticket to get to the top. Ticket price:
