The Philharmonic is one of the centers of musical life in the Austrian capital. The world-famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs here, as well as invited groups. The Philharmonic is also popular among visitors to Vienna, as the musicians often perform in costumes from the Mozart era and create the atmosphere of the 17th century. The first concert took place in this building, designed by Theophil Hansen, on January 6, 1870, during the reign of Franz Joseph I.
"The most important hall in the world" is the name of the Golden Hall of the Vienna Philharmonic. The acoustics here are amazingly clean. The auditorium has 1,744 seats and 300 standing places.
The central element here is the organ designed by Rieger-Orgelbau. This is the fourth organ installed here since its opening, namely in 2011.
For more than a century, concerts of the Vienna Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra have been regularly held here, and every year on January 1, the New Year's concert is broadcast on television around the world.
In addition to the Golden Hall, there is also a Brahms Hall. It can accommodate 600 people.
Since 2004, 4 new halls have appeared: glass (380 seats, often used for orchestra rehearsals), metal (70 seats, for alternative concert events), stone (60 seats, for conferences, symposia and for special events) and wooden, 50-seat, separated from the glass hall lobby by a sliding wall.
Since 2016, LEDs have been installed in the Philharmonic, which has significantly reduced energy consumption.
1842 is considered the date of the creation of the first professional orchestra in the capital of the Austrian Empire. The first concert took place on March 28. Among the Philharmonic's guest conductors, we note Karl Böhm, Carlo Maria Giulini, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, Georg Solti.
You can take part in 45-minute excursions that cost 10 euros for adults, 6 euros for youth 12–18 years old and free for children under 12 years old.
