Moulin Rouge - a magnificent spectacle

The Moulin Rouge cabaret is rightfully considered one of the most famous attractions in Paris. A fabulous show, unusual costumes, beautiful dancing women, the famous French Cancan, which was performed here for the first time, all this attracts thousands of tourists. The Moulin Rouge is part of the interesting history of Paris and a symbol of dreams that came true and failed, united and broken hearts, beauty, creativity and sin. The modern Moulin Rouge is, first of all, a spectacle, a show, an elite establishment, something between a nightclub and a museum, and not a way of life. And the legendary "Cancan" to Offenbach's music is still performed there.

While the whole world was developing at a rapid pace and Europe was engulfed in a technical revolution, when the Eiffel Tower was being built in Paris and the French capital was preparing to host the World Exhibition, in 1889 in the Montmartre district, on Place Blanche, Joseph Oehler and his partner Charles Zidler opened the "Red Mill" (in French, Moulin Rouge). The red color hinted at the red light district.

At that time, the Montmartre district was exempt from taxes on alcoholic beverages, and representatives of the bohemian elite - artists, actors, writers - would gather and spend time there.

The word "cabaret" is of Dutch origin and means a small room for drinking alcoholic beverages. This was the name given to a cozy, warm and friendly environment where you can have a good time.

To attract the attention of customers, the organizers laid out a garden and placed a large elephant, and the establishment was called "the first palace of women." Success came soon. In 1893, one of the dancers completely undressed on the stage of the "Moulin Rouge". So it was in this building that striptease was first performed. The "Cancan" to the music of Jacques Offenbach was also performed here.

"Moulin Rouge" has found itself in difficult situations several times, it even burned down in 1915, but it has always successfully overcome difficulties. Many famous people have visited here: the Prince of Wales, King Edward VII, Oscar Wilde, Pablo Picasso, Edith Piaf, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Yves Montagne, Ella Fitzgerald, Jean Gabin, Frank Sinatra, Charles Aznavour and others.

The Moulin Rouge Cabaret has twice entered the Guinness Book of Records. The first time was when its dancers performed the famous leg-throw move 29 times in thirty seconds. Later, they improved their achievement and managed to do it 30 times.

It is interesting that in 1963, a program called "Frou-Frou" brought the cabaret an incredibly large income. Since then, all shows begin with the letter "f". Recently, the Moulin Rouge has shown only one show - "Féerie". The budget for this performance is seven million dollars. Many people worked on its creation: musicians, actors, artists, designers, producers. In it, you will see not only charming dancers dressed in unusual costumes, but also jugglers, acrobats and even reptiles placed in water.

Actors are selected according to very strict rules. All candidates are measured and weighed. They must have flawless skin, size, weight, leg length, breast shape and size must meet the established standard.

It should be noted that the Moulin Rouge is one of the largest buyers of champagne in the world - 240 thousand bottles a year!
