 St. Matthias Church in Budapest

This Gothic-style church is not only a gathering place for believers. Concerts are also held here. The Church of St. Matthias has survived many storms of history, including destruction and fires, but after restoration and reconstruction it has always been reborn like a phoenix and today delights the eyes of local residents and guests of Budapest. The church bears the name of the ruler of Hungary, who is not considered a saint, but it is known as the Church of St. Matthias.

The first temple was built by St. Stephen in the 11th century. The Mongol-Tatar horde destroyed it. The new church was built by King Bela IV. Matthias Hunyadi, the great reformer, patron of art and architecture, added a bell tower to it, which retains its grandeur even in our time. Its beauty made the Turkish conquerors reconsider demolishing it, but they whitewashed the frescoed walls, and the mosque remained there for 145 years.

In the 19th century, the large-scale reconstruction of the temple was superbly carried out by the architect Frides Szulek.

At the entrance to the temple there is a bronze model of a church for the blind.

The organ in the church, which weighs more than 60 tons, deserves special mention. It is used both during the liturgy and during organ music concerts.
