 Belvedere - a Baroque masterpiece

The Belvedere complex is a real miracle of architecture and landscape design. In Italian, Belvedere means wonderful view. It is often called the "Vienna Versailles". From here you have a wonderful view of Vienna and St. Stephen's Cathedral. It was originally the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, a famous knight. In 1955, the Austrian Declaration of Independence was signed here. The main goal of the architect of the complex was to clearly display the military greatness and spiritual depth of the brave nobleman and patron, which he undoubtedly achieved.

The Belvedere consists of three parts: the Upper Belvedere, the Lower Belvedere with a greenhouse and a huge park. The author of the project in the Baroque style is Lucas von Hildebrandt. The construction of the lower belvedere was completed in 1716, the upper - in 1722. Eugene of Savoy had no children, and after his death the place was acquired by the emperor's wife Maria Theresa. There is also a pavilion “Belvedere 21” on the territory of the complex. It is a meeting place for lovers of contemporary Austrian and international art, cinema and music.

The art museum is located in the Upper Belvedere. In the past, ceremonial receptions and important negotiations were held in this majestic building. Now the most valuable collections of Austrian and German art from the 19th and 20th centuries are kept here. You will see paintings by Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, Schiele, Kokoschka, as well as the no less famous painting by the famous Austrian artist Gustav Klimt - “The Kiss”.

There are seven thematic rooms on three floors, where 420 works are exhibited.

And now from the Upper Belvedere

let's move to the Lower Belvedere.

Here you will see halls of marble, mirrors, gold, grotesque halls with unusual ornaments. The lower belvedere includes the stables of the former palace and a greenhouse converted into an exhibition hall.

The complex is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00, and the Belvedere 21 pavilion is open from 11:00 to 18:00.
