 Vienna public transport

Vienna's public transport network "Wiener Linien"includes metro, tram and bus. All of them are very comfortable and run exactly on schedule. Vienna's historic center, the Innere Stadt, can be explored in half a day, but you will need transport to visit other attractions further afield. Ground transport moves along specially designated lines, so it is not affected by traffic jams. I will provide you with information on fares, tickets, passes and money saving that will definitely make your life easier.

Vienna has 5 metro lines, 29 tram lines and 127 bus lines. Most transport does not operate at night. The metro operates from five in the morning until twelve at night, but on weekends and holidays it switches to round-the-clock operation and runs at 15-minute intervals at night.

If you decide to stay in the city late, don’t worry: Vienna’s night transport (24 such lines) runs at 30-minute intervals from 00:30 to 05:00. As usual, they are marked with the Latin letter N, and at stops you can see signs with cat eyes.

In Vienna there is a single ticket that allows you to travel on all three types of public transport, regardless of where you buy it.

  Types of tickets when traveling by public transport

Single ticket (1 Fahrt WIEN) - for adults costs - 2.40 euros (for the driver - 2.60 euros), for children 6-15 years old - 1.20 euros (for the driver - 1.40 euros), over 63 years old - 1.50 euros, for children under 6 years old (5 years inclusive) - travel is free; the ticket allows you to travel on all three types of public transport in Vienna once in one direction and change as many times as you need (albeit, within reason - a few minutes are enough to change from one transport to another. From the starting point to the ending point - a certain, but if you plan to walk and have lunch in between, you will have to buy a new ticket). Children of this age travel free of charge on Sundays, public holidays and during holidays.

The ticket must be stamped immediately after boarding ground transportation and before traveling on the metro. Keep your ticket until the end of your trip. This is what a single ticket looks like:

Please note that this ticket is valid for one zone in Vienna (Vienna is divided into zones). If, for example, you are going to an airport that is in a different zone, you need to buy an additional ticket.

Complex tickets are also available in the central zone of Vienna. They come in the following types:

Ticket for 1 day (1 WIEN tag) - with this ticket you can ride public transport as many times as you want within 24 hours. It takes effect immediately after composting and is valid until 1:00 the next day. The price of this ticket is 5.80 euros.

Ticket for 24 hours (24 Stunden WIEN) - with this ticket you can ride as many times as Travel by public transport as often as you want within 24 hours. It takes effect immediately after composting and lasts for 24 hours. The price of this ticket is 8 euros.

Ticket for 48 hours (48 Stunden WIEN) - with this ticket you can travel as many times as you want on public transport as many times as you like within 48 hours. It takes effect immediately after composting and lasts for 48 hours. The price of this ticket is 14.10 euros.

Ticket for 72 hours (72 Stunden WIEN) - with this ticket you can ride as many times as Travel by public transport as many times as you want within 72 hours. It takes effect immediately after composting and lasts for 72 hours. The price of this ticket is 17.10 euros.

Weekly pass (Wochenkarte) - with this ticket you can travel on public transport as many times as you like from Monday until 9:00 the next Monday. It comes into force immediately after composting and is valid until the specified period expires. The cost of such a ticket is 17.10 euros.

This is what a ticket machine looks like (there are other types of machines):

You can select the language you need (unfortunately, “Georgian” is not on the list) and buy a ticket. Do not use large bills.

If you are going to take the Vienna Ring Tram along the Ringstrasse, on the ring boulevard, you will have to buy a special ticket from the driver. Its cost: for adults – 12 euros, for children from 3 to 15 years old – 6 euros, for children under three years old – free.

Tourists arriving in Vienna are also offered a city tourist card: 24/48/72-hourly Vienna City Card (Die Wienkarte) and 24/48/72-hourly and 7 day Easy CityPass Vienna (Vienna PASS). I'll walk you through what each of them means and what the differences are between them.

Tourist card Vienna City Card (red) - 24/48/72-hourly, cost 17/25/29 euros, respectively. It includes:

- Free travel on all types of public transport during the specified period;

- discount when visiting 210 attractions, for dinner in some cafes and restaurants;

- discount on some excursions;

- discount on purchases in some stores;

- free travel for 1 child under 15 years old (proof of age required);

– skip-the-line entry during sightseeing;

– free instructions and a booklet with a list of specific discounts.

Tourist card Vienna City Card (white) - 24/48/72-hourly, cost 34/42/46 euros, respectively. This is the same as the red tourist card Vienna Card, only it does not mean free travel on public transport, but you have the right to ride for free on bus Hop-on-Hop-off.

Tourist card Easy CityPass Vienna - 24/48/72-hourle/7-daily, the cost is 14.90/19.90/24.90/29.90 euros, respectively. It includes:

- Free travel on all types of public transport during the specified period;

- discount when visiting many attractions;

- discounts in some cafes and restaurants;

- free travel for 1 child under 15 years old (proof of age required);

– skip-the-line entry during sightseeing;

– free instructions and a booklet with a list of specific discounts.

The tourist card is personalized and cannot be transferred to another person, unlike a single or multiple ticket.

Please note that the weekly card is only valid from 00:00 Monday until 09:00 the following Monday.

A tourist card is beneficial if you are actively planning to visit museums, temples, churches, attractions and cafes and restaurants. An adult should not buy it for the sake of a few euros discount. In this case, it is better to buy a regular all-inclusive ticket, and if you are traveling with a child 6-15 years old, you should buy a tourist card, because one child will travel for free on public transport.

The tourist card can also be purchased at information centers, for example at the Vienna Tourist Information Center on Albertinaplatz.

If you are going to travel in Vienna without buying a ticket, especially since there are no conductors in ground transport, and there are no turnstiles in the metro and you can enter freely, I do not recommend doing so, because on all routes there are controllers. Not only will you be asked to show your travel card, but they will also check to see if you have stamped it and if it has expired. The fine for traveling without a ticket in Vienna is 105 euros. So, I recommend that you buy a ticket and validate it. In the metro, this should be done before entering the platform, and in the bus and tram - immediately after entering the cabin.

Please note that on the bus and tram there are special buttons that must be pressed at the desired stop.

  Where to buy travel tickets

Tickets can be purchased at Tabaktrafiktobacco kiosks, tourist offices, Wiener Linien ticket offices (from Monday to Friday, from 06:30 to 18:30) and from the bus and tram driver, as well as from machines located at the entrance to each metro station and at some tram stops. Using the machine is simple: you select the type of ticket you need and the number of passengers and pay in cash or by credit card.
