What is the Budapest Card?
Budapest Card is a discount system specially created for tourists who if used wisely, it can save a certain amount of time and money. The card holder can travel for free on all types of public transport, as well as visit Museums of Budapest (but not all) to participate in walking tours with an English-speaking guide. The Budapest Tourist Card provides discounts in various places in the Hungarian capital - from baths to restaurants.
There are six types of Budapest Card. They differ from each other in terms of validity and, accordingly, price. Tourist cards for 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 hours and 72 hours Plus provide almost the same benefits, but, of course, with different time intervals.
Benefits for Budapest Card holders
- Free travel on all types of public transport during the validity period of the card. To the bus, trolleybus and tram are added cog tram and water bus;
- free entry to 20 museums and various centers;
- free tour of the cave;
- free entry to the Lukács baths;
- two walking tours (one in Buda, one in Pest) accompanied by an English-speaking guide;
- free mobile application about twelve thematic excursions (in English).
In addition, the card entitles tourists to a 10-50% discount in some cafes, restaurants, baths, theaters, museums, water parks and souvenir shops. With the 72-hour Plus Budapest Card you can additionally travel to the airport with a miniBUD and take a boat ride for free. on the Danube River, take the Budavar Siklo funicular, enter the Matthias Church and enjoy the Kürteskalacsi cake at Molnár'scafe. Where to buy Budapest Card?
Budapest Card can be purchased at the airport upon arrival in Budapest (how to get there from the airport to the city and vice versa read here) or at tourist offices in the city center. During the active season it is also sold by promoters in the city center. It is very convenient to buy it online – using a credit card.

Card expiration date and activation
Purchasing a card does not mean that it is activated. Its effect begins after the first use. Therefore, you can buy a Budapest Card in advance and start using it later.
To activate the card, you need to write in special fields the month, day and hour when you plan to use it, and it will be valid for as many days as you bought the card. Don’t try to cheat the system, because in Budapest there are strict inspectors and they check everything carefully.
You can activate the card for one year.
The card comes with a pocket brochure with a map of Budapest and metro map, as well as rules for using the card and a list of places where you can get a discount.
